Mission and Vision

Our Mission. Historic Eden Cemetery exists to honor, preserve, and steward the burial ground, records, and legacy of African Americans laid to rest at Eden, while ensuring dignity in burial, integrity in historical preservation, and service to present and future generations.

Our Vision. Historic Eden Cemetery will be a protected and respected historic site where African American history is preserved, burial records are secure and accessible, families are served with care and respect, and the legacy of those interred is safeguarded for generations to come.

Values

Dignity. We honor every individual interred at Eden through respectful burial practices, careful recordkeeping, and preservation of memory.

Stewardship. We accept responsibility for the long-term care of Eden’s land, structures, records, and history as caretakers for future generations.

Integrity. We commit to accuracy, transparency, and ethical practices in governance, documentation, and decision-making.

Preservation. We actively protect Eden’s physical and archival assets to prevent loss, deterioration, or erasure of African American history.

Accountability. We hold ourselves responsible to families, descendants, the community, and future generations through sound policies, planning, and oversight.

Intergenerational Responsibility. We make decisions today with an understanding that Eden must endure beyond current leadership, resources, and circumstances.

Community Trust. We recognize Eden as a sacred community institution and commit to earning and maintaining public trust through service, respect, and care.
